BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS  

We just celebrated Shavuot. Shavuot is the celebration of the formal founding of the Jewish people, when Moses came down from Sinai and gave our ancestors their very first Constitution: the Ten Commandments. Yet we don't celebrate the acceptance of the Torah until Simchat Torah, at the end of Sukkot. How come we don't celebrate the acceptance of the Torah on the same day we celebrate the fact that God gave us the Ten Commandments? My guess? Because receiving the Torah and accepting it, are two distinct aspects of who we are. Accepting the Torah means not only to “have it” but making it part of who we are...the same can be said about Jewish identity itself...
