BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS   

 

 

In 1871, a pogrom of unprecedented proportions destroyed the Jewish community of Odessa. The living conditions of the survivors, deprived of their homes, their livelihood and their dignity, was appalling. The Western powers, shocked  by the situation, promised help in rehabilitating these Jewish refugees as soon as possible. Ten years later, the survivors continued to linger in the refugee camps, and an assimilated Jew from Russia, Leon Pinsker, took the matter in his own hands and wrote a pamphlet called "Auto Emancipation" in 1882.
