BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS
This past week, in Israel, one issue was consistently present on the Media: the confrontation between Orthodox and Progressive Jews over the Western Wall. What is the conflict about? A number of years ago, a group of women, belonging to the progressive (Conservative and Reform) streams of Judaism, began gathering on Rosh Hodesh (the beginning of the Hebrew month) to pray at the Kotel (The Western Wall) in the women's section. So far...sounds good. When they prayed, however, they made a point of doing so while wearing kippah and Talit. In some cases, they even donned Tefilim, and in all cases, they were led in prayer by a woman and in several occasions they brought their own Torah Scroll to read from it. From an Orthodox perspective, these women were behaving as men, making their prayers offensive to their own sensibilities. Yet from the women's perspective, the attitude of the Orthodox rabbis was offensive and the confrontation became a confrontation over who owns the Wall rather than over how people pray.
