Exciting new things are happening in Northern Dutchess: the steering committee, calling itself "Northern Dutchess Jewish Alliance" is made up of residents of Northern Dutchess who are members of the Jewish Federation of Dutchess County, Temple Emmanuel in Kingston, Woodstock Jewish Congregation, Temple Beth-El and Vassar Temple. The committee is organizing the first program, an Ice Cream Social for April 24th. If you wish to help, contact Mark Neustadt.

MITZVAH DAY - MAY 16TH

The Mitzvah Day Commitee is in full swing organizing the event for Sunday, May 16th. If you wish to volunteer in organizing the event, or if you wish to lead one of the crews on that day, contact
Linda Tafapolsky by e-mail or by calling 845-471-9817
On Monday, April 12th, the Jewish community is again partnering with Dutchess Community College to commemorate Yom HaShoah. The program will start a 6:15 pm at James & Betty Hall Theater (Dutchess Hall). Following the traditional ceremony, Holocaust world renowned scholar and Holocaust survivor Gerhard L Weinberg will speak abot "Kristalnacht 1938: as experienced then and understood now". In coming weeks we will add information on other related events.

Israel to provide water in California

Mekorot, Israel's national water carrier and water tech company, is about to enter the drier regions of California.

It is almost mind-boggling that Israel, a country with such a dearth of fresh water resources, has become a leader in water technologies. That is, until you learn about Mekorot.

Mekorot's expertise in water management, specifically in desalinating water, is on its way to south California.

The company's activities in California will extend to water-poor areas such as Fresno in the San Joaquin Valley and other regions like it. The contract between Mekorot and WST was signed at the Fresno Convention and Entertainment Center where Mekorot's CEO recently lectured to about 800 people about Israel's water solutions.

Fresno is America's number one agricultural producer and new solutions for the large quantities of water needed to sustain agriculture there are badly needed. Poor water allocations for farmers have forced them to leave thousands of acres to lie fallow and many farmers are in a holding pattern.

Mekorot already manages about 30 small desalination plants in the south of Israel, and the idea is to do something similar with the brackish water along the southern California Pacific coast. Mekorot officials say that once government approval and investment are obtained, 10 to 50 small- to medium-sized desalination plants could be set up in California within 18 months.

"Most of the work will be done by local Californians," says Ronen, Mekorot's CEO. "We will create jobs and the water project will save energy. I always say that water is energy. If you give me the energy I will give you water. I am sure that we are going to provide green technology [to California]. It's complicated to provide water by green technology, but we will do our best."

Operating as a private company, wholly owned by the State of Israel, Mekorot sells water bonds through various local funds. It also commercializes the water technologies that it has developed over the decades, reaching about $500 million in exports every year.
