BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS
Senator Mark Kirk recently championed a piece of legislation that requires the UNWRA to report on the number of actual refugees receiving aid, rather than including their descendants without making a distinction. This bill was opposed, of course, by the UNWRA which defines Palestinian refugees as those “whose normal place of residence was Palestine during the period 1 June 1946 to 15 May 1948, and who lost both home and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 or 1967 conflicts, as well as their descendants”. What might seem more surprising is that the State Department also opposed the bill. It seems therefore that the State Department is endorsing the idea of “refugee” as an hereditary status.
