BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS

We are creatures not only of habits but of preconceived ideas. While the Founding Fathers argued extensively on ideological terms about what the new Republic should look like, in contemporary American society most of us barely pay attention to ideologies; we tend to be more “pragmatic” - or we would like to believe so...

Ideologies, however, are ever present in our lives. Ideology is defined in the Webster's Dictionary as “the doctrines, opinions, or way of thinking of an individual, class, etc”. In Philosophy it is also defined as “a system of ideas which shapes an individual's or a group's perception of the world around them”. In other words, what be believe to be true defines the way we look at the world. For example, if we believe that “everything that happens is God's will”, as many religious individuals do – then predestination is a given, and the measure of control we have over our environment is limited. On the other extreme, if we believe that God doesn't exist at all, our free will expands to include everything, and all moral and Ethical standards are culturally defined and therefore realtive. Of course, most of us live in a happy intermediate point, but still the ideas we have about God and his/her role and interaction with Human history shapes what we believe we can do and what we believe we cannot. Let me give you some Jewish examples.
