BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS
I remember, growing up, watching American Westerns both on TV and on the big screen. Some of the oldest ones struck me as very naive and, when I look at them through the lens of my life experience, extremely prejudiced. For example, when in order to make the point of how backwards the Indians (forget calling them “Native Americans”) were, they made them speak broken English that was, of course, doubled to Spanish as broken Spanish.
One of the phrases that made it for a while into the common speech beyond the screen was “White man speaks with forked tong”, meaning that the white man was being deceptive and used lies to achieve his goals. While having actors portraying the Natives use phrases like that was rooted in the white man's prejudice, in historical perspective there was some truth to the assertion. White man did speak with forked tong. And unfortunately many politicians and even common people seem to have caught the same bug...if achieving your goal demands that you lie, then by all means DO IT ! KEEP READING
