BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS
“The trouble with tribbles” was (and still is) one of the most popular episodes of the original “Star Trek” TV series...and it holds a lesson for our time. The episode dwells on a simple principle: The United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire are competing for control of a planet. The UFP brings a special kind of wheat which would make the planet a breadbasket for that entire sector of the Galaxy. The problem is that a well-meaning merchant brings into the station creatures called “tribbles” which can get anywhere, multiply like crazy, and eat everything they can find edible. As a result, the efforts of the UFP to introduce the new wheat to the planet is destroyed because the tribbles eat all the experimental seeds. So you might ask, how do I manage to extract a lesson from this?
