BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS
A few days ago, a Palestinian prisoner died of throat cancer in an Israeli hospital. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas immediately proclaimed him to be a martyr of the Palestinian struggle against occupation. In the (predictable) violence which followed, two Palestinian youth died in a confrontation with the Israeli Army at a checkpoint into Israel. The youth were part of an attack throwing firebombs against the checkpoint. As the violence in the West Bank heated up, Hamas launched missiles at Israel's southern cities.
In a parallel development, the international hackers' group “Anonymous” announced a coordinated effort to attack Israeli and Israel-related websites with the purpose of “erasing Israel off the Internet”. Many of those involved in this loose coalition appear to be from North Africa and the Palestinian territories. They named their operation “#OpIsrael”. According to Israeli sources, what makes this operation different from prior attempts to attack Israeli sites is the high degree of coordination between the players. The coordinated attack is scheduled for April 7.
