Mitzvah Day, our special day of community service is right around the corner, on Sunday, May 5th. It will be bigger and better than ever!
This year, please remember our special Mitzvah Day collections which can be dropped off at the JCCDC, 110 S. Grand Ave., after April 28th:
Boxes of cereal for Cereal Counts
Non-perishable food for the VA food pantry
NEW underwear and NEW socks for the Veterans at the VA Hospital
NEW twin comforters and pillowcases for the residents of the River Haven Shelter
We have a few projects that need extra volunteers this year:
The Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie needs help with raking, planting, and a spring cleanup
River Haven Youth Shelter (in Poughkeepsie) needs help with painting a fence
Camp Eden Village (in Putnam Valley, not far from Fahnstock State Park) needs help planting an orchard
New Horizons Briggs Farm (in Poughkeepsie) needs help painting a fence
Jewish Family Services (at the JCCDC) needs a few more volunteers to help serve breakfast and lunch
This is a wonderful opportunity for members of the local Jewish community, together with their friends of all faiths, to make a real difference. We will help the many non-profits in the area that serve the hungry, the homeless, children in foster care/residential treatment, preserve our streams, comfort older adults who reside in nursing homes...We have projects indoors and out, projects for those who prefer sedentary work and those who like to work out of doors, projects for 4 year olds and for 94 year olds. And make a difference.

BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS
We would probably all agree that if something walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and lay eggs like a duck...chances are it is a duck. If it is so easy to see such truism in the zoological domain, how come we have problems applying it to the Human domain?
Investigations into the social media from the two brothers charged with the Boston bombing, shows that they “were very upset about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq”; it also shows that the older brother had traveled back to Chechnya and to Sudan (both known recruitment grounds for Jihadism). Yet people seem reluctant to call them “Islamic Jihadists” because they're afraid of being politically incorrect.
