BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS
As I was recently driving down Hooker Avenue, I noticed in front of me a car with a funny bumper sticker attributed to Albert Einstein. It said “learn from yesterday, live for today”. I say it was funny because I happen to know the complete quote: “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning”.
The bumper sticker, by capturing only one part of the quote, changed its meaning. How many times we see or hear people doing that very same thing? One of the most often quoted sayings attributed to Rabbi Hillel has been written into many a speech and many an article under different mutilations. Sometimes it goes as “If I am not for myself, who will be?”, sometimes as “If not now, when?”, and far less often as “But if I'm only for myself, what am I?”. These three parts of Hillel's jewel of wisdom are rarely presented together, and the partial quotes do not represent the true intention of the author.
