Beginning August 18...

 

This September marks 25 years since the attacks of September 11, 2001. As we remember the nearly 3,000 lives stolen that day, Jewish Federation of Dutchess County will commemorate this anniversary in a way rooted in Jewish tradition: through action. We invite our community to join us for 25 Days of Mitzvot—one mitzvah a day leading to September 11.

 

A mitzvah is often described as a “good deed,” but the Hebrew word actually means commandment—something we are called upon to do. Over these 25 days, we’ll share simple opportunities to give, help, learn and serve, along with some of the Jewish meaning and tradition behind them.

 

The number 18 has special significance in Jewish tradition. Chai (חי) is the Hebrew word for life, and the numerical values of the two Hebrew letters that spell chai add up to 18. So we begin on August 18 with life—and with the idea that remembrance can move us to act.
